Rangers' Lewis to have season-ending surgery

Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - The Texas Rangers announced on Tuesday that Colby Lewis will not pitch this season due to a bone spur on the veteran hurler's right hip that will require surgery.

Lewis was attempting to return from a torn flexor tendon in his right elbow that has sidelined him since July of last season. He appeared to be nearing a return to the Rangers' rotation, having thrown five innings for Double-A Frisco in a rehab assignment on Saturday.

"I've got to get it done to give myself another shot of pitching in the big leagues," said Lewis. "I'd love to pitch for the Rangers again."

After returning to the majors after a two-year stint in Japan, Lewis started 32 games for Texas in both the 2010 and '11 seasons and won a combined 26 games over that span while helping the Rangers to back-to-back World Series appearances. The 34-year-old went 6-6 with a 3.43 ERA in 16 outings last season prior to undergoing elbow surgery.
