Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - Bryn Renner led the Tar Heels by completing
21-of-28 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns as North Carolina defeated
Wake Forest, 49-23, in Atlantic Coast Conference play at Kenan Stadium.
North Carolina (6-3, 2-3 ACC) snapped a two-game losing skid and became bowl
eligible with the win. Giovani Bernard was a huge part of North Carolina's
offense in the contest, gaining 154 yards and scoring two rushing touchdowns
on 27 attempts and also scored a touchdown as a receiver.
North Carolina's receivers, Dwight Jones and Erik Highsmith both contributed
to the victory. Jones led all receivers with 138 yards on six catches and
Highsmith tallied 87 receiving yards and two touchdown grabs on four
receptions. The Tar Heels' defensive squad was led by the great play of
Zach Brown as he recorded nine tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, forced a fumble,
recovered a fumble, intercepted a pass and recorded a sack.
Tanner Price completed 17-of-29 passes for 146 yards for Wake Forest (5-3,
4-2), but threw three interceptions in the loss. Brandon Pendergrass rushed
for 99 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Michael Campanaro led the Demon
Deacons with six catches for 88 receiving yards.
UNC took the lead in this one behind the arm of Renner as he threw a seven-
yard scoring pass to Bernard less than six minutes in. Renner struck again
with 4:12 left in the first quarter as he connected with Highsmith on a four-
yard touchdown pass that gave the Tar Heels a 14-0 lead heading into the
The Demon Deacons staged a comeback in the second quarter when Pendergrass
rushed eight yards for a touchdown. Kicker Jimmy Newman added a 22-yard field
goal to cut the deficit to four points with just over seven minutes remaining
in the first half.
Bernard scored his second touchdown with just seconds left in half as he
crossed the goal line from four yards out to give North Carolina a 21-10 lead
Wake Forest opened up the second half scoring when Pendergrass ran 30 yards
into the end zone to make the score 21-17.
North Carolina responded with 2:29 left in the third period with a one-yard
touchdown rush by Ryan Houston, capping a nine-play, 80-yard drive that put
the Heels up 28-17 headed into the final quarter.
Bernard scored on a four-yard rush less than a minute into the quarter for the
Tar Heels and then barely two minutes later Renner completed a 38-yard
touchdown pass to Highsmith. The final score for the hosts came courtesy of a
five-yard TD run by A.J. Blue which made it 49-17.
Tommy Bohanon scored on a three-yard run for Wake Forest with 2:23 left to
make North Carolina's advantage 49-24 final.
North Carolina posted 562 yards of total offense, while limiting Wake Forest
to 331 on the afternoon.
