NCAA Game Summary - Clemson at North Carolina State
(Saturday, November 14th)
Final Score: (24) Clemson 43, North Carolina State 23
Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - C.J. Spiller had three touchdowns -- one
rushing, one receiving and one passing -- as 24th-ranked Clemson routed North
Carolina State, 43-23, in an ACC affair at Carter-Finley Stadium.
Spiller rushed for 97 yards on 18 touches, caught three passes for 48 yards
and threw a 17-yard scoring pass for Clemson (7-3, 5-2 ACC), which has won
five straight games, including a 40-24 win over Florida State last weekend.
Kyle Parker recorded 183 yards and two scores on 12-of-18 throws, and Michael
Palmer and Xavier Dye each had a touchdown catch.
Jamie Harper had four rushes for 86 yards and a TD, and Jacoby Ford added a
rushing score.
"It was a great team win," Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said. "It was a
game where we picked each other up. I was disappointed with the penalties we
had, but we'll focus on that and get better before next week. I thought the
offense kept answering every time NC State scored."
Russell Wilson completed 12-of-32 passes for 183 yards with two touchdowns and
a pick for North Carolina State (4-6, 1-5), which defeated Maryland on
November 7. The Wolfpack have dropped five of their last six. Jarvis Williams
had three catches for 44 yards and two TDs, while Koyal George added a scoring
reception. Toney Baker rushed for 76 yards on 19 carries.
"We had too many drops and just could never get off on the right foot, NC
State head coach Tom O'Brien said. "An early touchdown would have helped our
cause. We simply made too many mistakes and allowed too many big plays
defensively. We don't want to be in a situation like this, but we're in it
and you have to adjust. Plus, you have to give a lot of credit to Clemson."
Spencer Benton opened the scoring with just over six minutes left in the first
quarter when he nailed a 28-yard field goal. Ford's 17-yard touchdown run
around the right side made it a 10-0 game early in the second.
Spiller's 17-yard TD pass to Dye just over two minutes into the second
helped Clemson pad its lead.
NC State countered on its next series on an 18-yard scoring toss from Wilson
to George that allowed the Wolfpack to cut the deficit to 17-7.
Clemson responded when Parker found Palmer in the end zone for a five-yard
score with 4:09 left in the half, and the Tigers took a 24-7 advantage
into the locker room at the intermission.
NC State got into the end zone on its first drive of the third quarter, when
Wilson hit Williams for an eight-yard score, but a Spiller 16-yard touchdown
run gave the visitors a 30-14 lead with a shade under eight minutes
remaining.
Josh Czajkowski responded with 26-yard field goal for the Wolfpack, but a
34-yard Parker-to-Spiller TD, then a 69-yard scoring run from Harper made it a
43-17 game with just under nine minutes to play.
A two-yard TD pass from NC State's Mike Glennon to Williams closed out the
scoring.
