West Point, NY (Sports Network) - Sean Renfree threw two touchdowns to lead
the Duke Blue Devils to a 35-19 victory over the Army Black Knights in a non-
league affair at Michie Stadium.
Renfree completed 7-of-8 passes for 106 yards for Duke (1-1), while starting
quarterback Thaddeus Lewis struggled, completing just 5-of-16 throws for just
60 yards and one score.
As for the Black Knights (1-1), they wasted a tremendous effort by the rushing
attack, which churned out 266 yards on 4.7 yards per attempt. Patrick Mealy
finished the game with 99 yards on just 10 totes, while Trent Steelman added
75 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries.
The Black Knights struck early in the opening frame, as Steelman pushed
into the end zone on a two-yard run.
Army extended its lead to 10-0 early in the second stanza when Alex Carlton
nailed a 43-yard field goal.
The Blue Devils finally got on the scoreboard midway through the second
quarter when Lewis hit Conner Vernon with a 14-yard touchdown pass.
Midway through the third quarter the Blue Devils took their first lead of the
game when Renfree connected with Brett Huffman for a 17-yard scoring
However, the Black Knights answered back on their following drive, cutting
their deficit to 14-13 with a 31-yard field goal by Carlton.
Seconds in the final frame the Blue Devils pushed their lead to 21-13 when
Renfree hit Donovan Varner with a 31-yard touchdown pass.
The Blue Devils blew the game wide open late in the final frame thanks to Leon
Wright, who returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the matter of 16
seconds. Wright's first pick six went for 51 yards, while the second
interception was returned for 33 yards. The two scores pushed Duke's lead to
Carson Williams completed an eight-yard touchdown pass to Ali Villanueva as
time expired in regulation, but it would not matter, as the Blue Devils would
hold on for the 16-point victory.
