GAME NOTES: The South Dakota State Jackrabbits will take to the court for the first time in the new year as they travel to face the IUPUI Jaguars in Summit League action Thursday.
South Dakota State has won four games in a row, but hasn't seen the hardwood in a competitive contest since Dec. 28 thanks to a postponement of a Jan. 3 matchup with Buffalo that would have been the final non-conference game of the season. The Jackrabbits downed UMKC, 65-60, in their last game.
IUPUI finally snapped a five-game losing streak with a dominant win over Judson, 112-50, in the Jungle. The losses have piled up for the Jaguars this season, but maybe this current four-game homestand will help cure some of their woes.
South Dakota State holds an 8-6 all-time series lead over the Jags, including the last seven in a row. The last time these teams met was on March 9, 2013, which was a 66-49 Jackrabbits victory.
Three players scored in double figures to help South Dakota State defeat Missouri-Kansas City in the team's last outing. Brayden Carlson scored a team- high 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting in the contest with six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Cody Larson added 14 and Jordan Dykstra contributed 13 and eight rebounds in the victory. The Jackrabbits won despite 22.7 percent shooting from beyond the 3-point arc and 18 team turnovers. SDSU forced 16 UMKC giveaways, and the Kangaroos shot a dismal 45.5 percent from the free- throw line.
Dykstra leads the team this season in scoring average at 15.9 ppg, two more than Carlson's 13.9 ppg average. Both players are shooting at least 40 percent from 3-point range, and at least 46 percent from the floor. Dykstra adds a team-best 8.3 rpg, while Carlson contributes a team-high 41 assists. Larson isn't far behind Carlson's points total, averaging 13.2 ppg. The Jackrabbits as a unit score 72.6 ppg this season.
IUPUI jumped out to a 6-0 lead against Judson and never looked back, running away with the contest, 112-50. It's by far the most lopsided win the Jaguars have had all season, and perhaps what they need to get back on track as conference play opens up. Donovan Gibbs scored a career-high 32 points in the victory and grabbed 11 rebounds for the double-double. Gibbs shot a spectacular 13-of-16 from the floor and added three blocked shots in the win. Ian Chiles added 18 points, Josh James netted 17, and Khufu Najee scored 11 and pulled down 11 rebounds.
Chiles leads the team this season in scoring, averaging 17.4 ppg. He has a strong hold of the team lead in scoring, with Mitch Patton, who missed the game against Judson, next in line at 12.1 ppg. Marcellus Barksdale tops the team in rebounding with a 7.8 rpg margin. He also leads with 20 blocked shots and 19 steals. The Jaguars shoot 43.7 percent from the floor, and average 70.7 ppg.
Even though this is the first game South Dakota State has played in 2014, the Jaguars should have the edge against a struggling IUPUI squad that hasn't beaten a Division I opponent since Dec. 7.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: South Dakota State 76, IUPU-Indianapolis 67
