GAME NOTES: Two teams coming off narrow defeats meet at the Super Pit on Thursday night, as the UAB Blazers take on the North Texas Mean Green in a Conference USA tilt.
UTEP handed UAB a 63-61 defeat last Saturday. The Blazers have not been able to get any momentum going recently, having alternated wins and losses over the last five games.
North Texas also lost a heartbreaker last weekend, falling to Charlotte on the road, 76-74. The Mean Green have now dropped three of their last four decisions.
The only other meeting between these two programs was a 79-73 victory by UAB on Dec. 4, 1997. This is the first time the teams have met in Denton.
Rod Rucker scored 17 points in the loss to UTEP, while Chad Frazier and CJ Washington added 13 and 11 points, respectively. UAB led by a point with just under two minutes to play, but UTEP was able to make a late run and grab the victory. The Blazers shot a woeful 2-of-14 from 3-point range during the contest.
Frazier leads UAB in scoring this season with 17.5 ppg, and he has a team-best 79 assists as well. Washington (14.7 ppg) and Rucker (11.0 ppg) round out the scoring attack. UAB is tops in the conference in rebounding, averaging 46.5 rpg, with four players averaging at least 6.6 rpg, led by Washington with 7.6 rpg. UAB nets 77.9 ppg, while allowing 71.6 ppg to opponents.
The Mean Green lost on a last-second layup in its matchup with Charlotte last Saturday. The high scorer for the Mean Green was bench player Brandan Walton, who hit for 13 points, while fellow reserve T.J. Taylor notched 10 points, Jordan Williams added 12 and Colin Voss 11. The Mean Green held a 58-47 advantage with over 12 minutes left in the game before the 49ers began their comeback. A 10-0 run brought the margin down to one, but the Mean Green pushed that back out to four-point lead with just two minutes remaining, but they would not score the rest of the way and fell at the buzzer.
Alzee Williams leads the team in scoring this season with 12.2 ppg on 45.5 percent shooting from the field, although he is netting just 5.3 ppg in conference play. Jordan Williams is second on the squad with 11.8 ppg, and is the team's leading rebounder at 6.2 rpg. North Texas averages 72.6 ppg but give up 73.0 ppg.
Both teams would love to win this game to get back on track, but the Blazers are the more potent scoring squad and can also control the boards, so expect for them to come into Denton and escape with the victory.
