St. Thomas, VI (SportsNetwork.com) - Evan Smotrycz nearly had a double-double as the Maryland Terrapins earned an 80-66 victory over the Northern Iowa Panthers in the semifinals of the Paradise Jam at the Sports and Fitness Center.
Smotrycz finished with 20 points and nine rebounds for Maryland (3-2), which advances to face Providence in Monday's title round. Jake Layman added 19 points, Nick Faust dropped in 17 and Dez Wells had 16 points to go with six rebounds and as many assists.
Seth Tuttle (19 points) and Chip Rank (10) each came a rebound shy of a double-double for Northern Iowa (2-3). Deon Mitchell contributed 13 points before fouling out and Nate Buss had 11 off the bench before also fouling out. The Panthers will face La Salle tomorrow.
Maryland clung to a 33-30 lead at the break after shooting 46.7 percent from the field. Northern Iowa connected on just 36.7 percent of its shots from the floor but had a 9-0 edge from beyond the arc to keep it close.
After the break the Terrpains knocked down 50 percent of their shots from the field, including a 6-of-10 effort from 3-point range, to pull away for the victory.
Maryland outscored Northern Iowa in the paint (42-28) and off turnovers (15-8).
