Toledo, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Drummond scored 28 points to lead the Toledo Rockets as they rallied past the Western Michigan Broncos, 96-85, in overtime during a Mid-American Conference clash at Savage Arena.
Julius Brown added 18 points and 10 assists for Toledo (24-5, 12-4 MAC), which has won three of its last four. J.D. Weatherspoon tacked on 14 points, Nathan Boothe chipped in 13 and Rian Pearson netted 11.
David Brown paced Western Michigan (19-9, 12-4) with 29 points. Shayne Whittington hung up 25 points and 13 rebounds and Tucker Haymond contributed 14. The Broncos had won eight straight entering the contest.
Western Michigan led at halftime, 45-33., The Broncos hit on 65.4 percent from the floor, including 8-of-12 from 3-point range, in the opening frame, while limiting the Rockets to 33.3 percent shooting.
Toledo turned the tables in the second half when it shot 53.8 percent from the field and limited the Broncos to 11 field goals. Drummond hit a layup with just over a minute to play to tie the score at 75-75. The two teams then traded 2-of-2 efforts from the free-throw line in the final minute to send the game to overtime.
The Rockets opened the extra frame on a 9-1 run and never looked back, as they escaped with the win.
Toledo had a 34-19 scoring advantage in points off of turnovers, which proved to be critical.
