Boone, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Cain logged a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, as the UNC Greensboro Spartans defeated the Appalachian State Mountaineers, 66-60, in a Southern Conference matchup at Holmes Convocation Center.
Cain went 6-of-11 from the field for the Spartans (9-9, 2-1 SoCon), who have won three of their last five contests. Tevon Saddler and Nicholas Paulos each added 13 points for the visitors.
Jay Canty scored 15 points to lead the Mountaineers (4-11, 0-2), who lost their third straight and first game at home this season. Tevin Baskin and Tab Hamilton both tallied 13 points.
The Spartans shot 46.2 percent from the field in the opening half, with the Mountaineers at just 30 percent. Appalachian State made up for the shortcoming with 8-of-9 at the free-throw line, good for a 30-29 lead at the half.
The Mountaineers improved to 38.3 percent from the floor in the second half, but that included just 1-of-10 from beyond the arc. The Spartans, shooting 47.8 percent and hitting 13-of-20 at the line, put the game away and led by as many as 11 late in the contest.
UNCG had more control of the paint, where it outrebounded its opponent, 41-34, and outscored the Mountaineers, 32-22.
