Mobile, AL (SportsNetwork.com) - Led by 24 points from Antoine Allen, the South Alabama Jaguars took down the Texas-Arlington Mavericks, 78-73, in the regular-season finale for both Sun Belt Conference teams at the Mitchell Center.
For the Jaguars (11-20, 5-13 SBC), who have already been eliminated from postseason play, Augustine Rubit added 18 points with 14 rebounds, and Mychal Ammons and Ken Williams each chipped in with 13 points.
Brandon Edwards led the Mavericks (14-16, 9-9) with 18 points, hitting a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line, while Jamel Outler finished with 13 points, Reger Dowell scored 11 and dished out five assists, and Anthony Walker added 10 points. UTA will go into the conference tournament next week in New Orleans as the sixth-seed and will face UL-Monroe on Thursday night.
Both teams struggled from the field to start the game. The Mavericks shot just 36 percent from the field, including 2-of-8 from 3-point range. The Jaguars were even worse at 28.6 percent, including 6-of-20 from beyond the arc. The Mavericks took a slim 30-29 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Jaguars caught fire, connecting on 51.9 percent from the field, including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. The Mavericks continued to have problems getting the ball through the hoop, hitting on just 32.3 percent from the field and 5-of-17 from the perimeter. With the game tied at 54-54 with eight minutes to play, the Jaguars went on a 16-4 run to take the lead for good.
The Jaguars finished with a 42-41 rebounding edge. The Mavericks got more production from their bench, outscoring the Jaguars' reserves, 30-7.
