San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Xavier Thames scored 15 points as the San Diego State Aztecs easily dismissed the UC Riverside Highlanders, 77-41, in non-conference action at Viejas Arena.
Also scoring in double figures for the Aztecs (1-0) were Josh Davis and Winston Shepard with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Davis also accounted for a team-best eight rebounds, Shepard six boards and five assists.
The Highlanders (0-1) were paced by Taylor Johns who came up a rebound shy of a double-double as he dropped in 14 points and logged four blocked shots. Sam Finley chipped in eight points in 21 minutes off the bench.
San Diego State scored the first points of the contest and never looked back, limiting the visitors to a total of just six field goals in the first half in order to claim a lopsided 38-13 advantage at the break. The Highlanders didn't do themselves any favors by missing all seven free-throw attempts over the first 20 minutes.
In the second half UCR continued to struggle at the charity stripe (8-of-16) and missed on all four attempts behind the three-point line, en route to the 36-point defeat.
The Highlanders ended up with more turnovers (21) than made field goals (16) on the night.
