(Saturday, September 1st)
Final Score: Arizona 24, Toledo 17 (OT)
Tucson, AZ (Sports Network) - Matt Scott's 10-yard touchdown pass in the
overtime period propelled the Arizona Wildcats to a 24-17 victory over the
Toledo Rockets in thrilling season opener at Arizona Stadium.
Scott completed 30-of-46 attempts for 387 yards and two touchdowns and
contributed 74 yards on the ground for Arizona (1-0), which kicked off the
Rich Rodriguez era with the overtime triumph. Ka'Deem Carey rushed for a game-
high 147 yards and a touchdown while Austin Hill led all receivers with 139
yards and a touchdown. Dan Buckner added 116 yards on 10 catches and tight end
Terrence Miller had 80 yards and a touchdown.
The Rockets (0-1) also had a new face on the sidelines as Matt Campbell, who
coached Toledo in its bowl game last season under an interim basis, made his
first appearance as the team's full-time head coach. Terrance Owens and Austin
Dantin split time at quarterback for Campbell's squad. Owens completed 11-
of-22 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown, while Dantin completed 10-of-25
attempts for 63 yards and was sacked twice. David Fluellen led the Rockets'
rushing attack with 72 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.
Arizona's John Bonano provided the only points of the opening quarter as he
connected on a 26-yard field goal that gave his team a 3-0 lead.
The Rockets took a 7-3 lead early in the second period as Owens competed a
59-yard touchdown pass to Alonzo Russell. The Wildcats responded as Scott
hooked up with Hill for a 30-yard touchdown pass with just over 12 minutes
left in the first half.
Toledo jumped back in front as Fluellen punched it in from a yard out at
the 6:01 mark of the period. Neither team managed to score again before the
end of the half which sent the Rockets into the intermission on top, 14-10.
The Wildcats answered after the break as Carey broke free for a 73-yard
touchdown run at the third quarter's 10:44 mark that gave his squad a 17-14
lead. Arizona had a chance to build on the lead after recovering a fumble by
Owens at Toledo's 32-yard line, however Bonano missed a 24-yard field goal off
the right upright.
The Rockets evened the score in the early stages of the fourth quarter as
Jeremiah Detmer drilled a 40-yard field goal that tied it up, 14-14.
Arizona failed to take advantage of opportunities at crucial moments in the
final frame. Arizona was stopped on a fourth-and-one near mid-field after
Taimi Tutogi was wrapped up in the backfield. Then with seconds left to play,
Bonano
missed a 25-yard field goal wide left, which forced the game into overtime.
The Wildcats made up for their fourth quarter follies in the extra period.
After Toledo won the toss and elected to play defense first, Scott threw
the go-ahead 10-yard touchdown pass to Miller to start overtime. Toledo was
sent backwards by a false start and a delay of game penalty before Dantin's
pass on fourth-and-20 fell incomplete to end the game.
Arizona amassed 624 yards to Toledo's 358. The Rockets are 0-4 all time versus
Arizona.
