Final Score: San Diego State 42, Army 7
San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - The San Diego State Aztecs posted four
rushing touchdowns as the team beat the Army Black Knights at their own game
with a 42-7 victory in non-conference play at Qualcomm Stadium.
Adam Muema carried the ball 15 times and finished with 98 yards and a score
for the Aztecs (1-1), while Walter Kazee accounted for 51 yards and two TDs on
seven carries for the hosts. Quarterback Ryan Katz hit 14-of-21 passing for
215 yards and a TD as well.
The Black Knights (0-1) were paced by Raymond Maples who accounted for a game-
high 107 yards rushing on 19 attempts, followed by Terry Baggett with an even
100 yards and the only score of the night on one of his 13 carries. Trent
Steelman converted 3-of-8 passing for just 50 yards and was picked off twice.
In the first quarter both Kazee and Adam Dingwell reached the end zone for the
Aztecs on runs of four and seven yards, respectively, to give the hosts a 14-0
advantage.
With 8:10 remaining in the first half, Kazee and the SDSU offense struck again
as the running back streaked down the right sideline en route to a 22-yard TD
to make the score 21-0.
An awkward lob pass by Steelman was picked off by Eric Pinkins with 1:22
remaining before the break and brought back to the Army 45, giving the Aztecs
plenty of time to go on the attack once again. Unfortunately, the offense
sputtered and was forced to attempt a 40-yard field goal which missed to the
right with, leaving SDSU with a three-touchdown advantage at the break.
In the third quarter the Aztecs picked up where they left off, mounting
another scoring drive that was capped by a one-yard TD surge by Muema to push
the lead to 28-0.
On the ensuing possession by Army, Steelman threw into heavy coverage and was
intercepted by Josh Gavert who returned the ball to the 33-yard line for the
hosts.
On the first play from scrimmage Katz hooked up with Ezell Ruffin for a 25-
yard pass to the eight-yard line. Katz then tossed a ball out to the right
side to Chad Young who easily slipped into the end zone.
The Black Knights finally got on the board on their next possession thanks to
a 10-yard TD run by Baggett, making the score 35-7.
Unfortunately for the visitors, they gave the score right back to San Diego
State as Colin Lockett took the ensuing kickoff 96 yards to the end zone to
bump the lead back to five touchdowns with just under six minutes to play in
the third quarter and that's how the game ended.
Army, the top rushing team in the nation in 2011 with an average of 346.5
ypg, finished the night with a collective 282 yards on the ground. In the
meeting between these two squads last season, the Knights rolled up 403
rushing yards and three touchdowns on 77 attempts.
