Texans activate Reed, reach 53-man limit

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - The Houston Texans activated veteran safety Ed Reed off the physically unable to perform list Saturday and placed three rookies on injured reserve en route to getting down to the NFL's 53-man roster limit.

Reed, the eight-time All-Pro who was signed as a free agent in the offseason, missed all of August after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his hip to repair a small labral tear.

Reed's availability for the Sept. 9 season opener against the San Diego Chargers remains up in the air but if he remained on the PUP list, he would have missed at least the first six games of the season.

Rookie offensive tackle Brennan Williams and fellow freshman Trevardo Williams, an outside linebacker, along with wide receiver Alan Bonner were all placed on injured reserve.

Houston released defensive ends Keith Browner and Delano Johnson, tight end Jake Byrne, cornerbacks Roc Carmichael and Elbert Mack, fullback Tyler Clutts, inside linebackers Cameron Collins and Mike Mohamed, wide receivers Andy Cruse and EZ Nwachukwu, offensive lineman Tyler Horn and Alex Kupper, running backs Dennis Johnson and Deji Karim, safeties Orhian Johnson and Jawanza Starling, nose tackle Chris Jones and offensive tackle Nate Menkin.

Finally defensive lineman Daniel Muir, nose tackle David Hunter and wide receiver Mike Smith were jettisoned after agreeing to injury settlements.

The Texans will open the regular season on Sept. 9, when they visit the San Diego Chargers.
