Final Score: San Diego State 35, New Mexico 30
San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Muema ran for 233 yards and three touchdowns as he led the San Diego State Aztecs to a 35-30 win over the New Mexico Lobos in Mountain West Conference play at Qualcomm Stadium.
Muema carried the ball 27 times in the contest and accounted for the bulk of San Diego State's 249 net rushing yards as the Aztecs (4-4, 3-1 MWC) won for the fourth time in the last five outings. Quarterback Quinn Kaehler connected on all but five of his 21 pass attempts for another 201 yards and a pair of scores.
The Lobos (2-6, 0-4), losers of three straight, were paced by Teriyon Gipson who scored twice on the ground on just five carries. Kasey Carrier accounted for a team-best 72 rushing yards, while quarterback Cole Gautsche converted 6- of-16 for 101 yards and an interception. Clayton Mitchem stepped up and hit on all four of his passes for 69 yards and a TD in the setback.
On the first play from scrimmage the Aztecs jumped out to a lead as Kaehler hooked up with Ezell Ruffin on a 75-yard TD pass play. Ruffin finished the meeting with seven catches for 165 yards and two TDs.
Nine minutes later Muema made the score 14-0 when he found the end zone on a four-yard run.
Gipson's 20-yard touchdown run later in the first frame cut New Mexico's deficit to 14-7, which is where the teams stood at the break.
New Mexico kicker Justus Adams knocked through a 20-yard field goal at the 9:12 mark of the third quarter and later in the period Crusoe Gongbay delivered no an 18-yard touchdown run for the Lobos as well. However, in between Ruffin's 24-yard TD catch kept the score close as the teams headed to the final frame with SDSU ahead by a 21-17 margin.
The squads continued to trade scores in the fourth, beginning with a Muema two-yard TD run for the Aztecs.
Gipson countered for the visitors with a five-yard TD, but with under two minutes remaining in regulation Muema's one-yard TD pushed the SDSU advantage to double digits, 35-23.
One last gasp from the Lobos came from Mitchem as he combined with Tyler Duncan on a 36-yard TD pass, but by then it was too little, too late.
