Morgantown, WV (Sports Network) - Freshman Ford Childress threw three touchdown passes in his collegiate debut to lead the West Virginia Mountaineers to a 41-7 rout over the Georgia State Panthers in non-conference play from Milan Puskar Stadium.
Childress got the start over junior Paul Millard, who started the first two games, with mixed results. Childress took advantage of his opportunity and completed 25-of-41 passes for 359 yards. Charles Sims headlined the ground game for the Mountaineers (2-1), as he ran for 116 yards and a TD on 18 carries.
Travis Evans ran for 118 yards and a score for the Panthers (0-3), who have not tasted victory since last October.
WVU opened the scoring with a 42-yard field goal from Josh Lambert less than four minutes into the game. Later in the opening frame, the Mountaineers found the end zone as Childress connected with Daikiel Shorts for a 21-yard touchdown pass, capping an 11-play, 93-yard drive.
The Mountaineers took a 17-0 lead at the 2:50 mark of the second quarter, when Childress tossed a 45-yard scoring strike to Ivan McCartney.
The Panthers got on the scoreboard with a big play early in the third quarter, as Evans broke free for a 65-yard touchdown burst to trim the margin to 10.
Lambert answered with a 23-yard field goal with four and a half minutes remaining in the third quarter.
WVU began to take control in the fourth. Sims scored on a 32-yard scamper to make it a 27-7 game with 14:50 to play. Three minutes later, Childress found Shorts for another touchdown, this time from 23 yards as the Mountaineers stretched their lead to 34-7.
Dreamius Smith closed out the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown run in the final seconds.
West Virginia finished the game with 604-220 edge in total offense.
