GAME NOTES: The Marshall Thundering Herd will close the Cam Henderson Center on Tuesday as they host the Southern Miss Golden Eagles for a Conference USA tilt.
The Golden Eagles pummeled the Thundering Herd in the first meeting of the season on Jan. 23, coasting to a 102-46 victory in Hattiesburg. Although the win was the third in five games in the series for USM, Marshall still owns a 8-7 all-time series edge.
Donnie Tyndale's Golden Eagles are coming off an 88-69 victory over East Carolina that lifted them to a 22-7 overall record and also an 11-3 standing in the Conference USA. USM is locked into the No. 2 seed for the conference tourney. The Golden Eagles will conclude their regular season at home on Saturday against UCF.
Dewayne Davis is the go-to-guy within the Golden Eagles' offense and provides a team-best average of 14.5 ppg with 40.4 percent accuracy from beyond the arc. Davis had 17 points and nine rebounds in the team's recent win over ECU while Neil Watson paced the squad with a perfect 7-of-7 showing from beyond the arc en route to 26 points. Jonathan Mills recorded his fifth double-double of the year and the 11th of his career, scoring 15 points and grabbing a career-high 17 rebounds. USM dominated the boards, earning a 42-23 rebounding edge, while also shooting lights out from 3-point range, hitting 13-of-20 shots. USM is fourth in the C-USA in scoring with 74.0 ppg and leads the league defensively with only 60.6 points allowed per outing. Southern Miss leads C-USA in scoring margin (+12.4), field goal percentage (48.0), 3-point percentage (38.7), rebounding margin (+6.9), steals (10.6) and turnover margin (+2.7).
Tom Herrion's Thundering Herd were routed once again on Saturday as they dropped a 103-76 decision at Houston to mark their third loss in the past four games. The setback lowered Marshall to a 12-17 overall record that includes a 5-9 mark versus league foes. The Herd will finish off their regular season slate on Saturday against ECU in Greenville.
DeAndre Kane poured in a game-high 27 points against the Cougars, while junior forward Elijah Pittman tallied 22 points and eight boards. Dennis Tinnon, who pulls down 9.3 boards per tilt, finished with 13 points and 12 boards to register his third double-double in four games. Pittman paces the team with 15.8 ppg, while Kane posts 14.4 points and a C-USA leading 6.9 assists per tilt. The Thundering Herd are one of just two teams in the conference with a negative scoring margin as they are being out-produced by an average of 3.9 ppg.
The Thundering Herd have had a very disappointing campaign to this point and their inaugural performance against USM doesn't inspire a lot of confidence that they will be able to start a last second push in this one. The Golden Eagles, who are still hopeful for an NCAA Tournament berth, should be able to keep their hot streak going with ease despite being on the road.
