Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Evan Payne scored 27 points as the Loyola Marymount Lions topped the BYU Cougars, 87-76, in the West Coast Conference opener for each team at Gersten Pavilion.
Anthony Ireland finished with 14 points on 5-of-15 shooting and also handed out nine assists for Loyola Marymount (9-4, 1-0 WCC). Gabe Levin scored 12 points and brought down seven rebounds and CJ Blackwell chipped in 11 points.
Kyle Collinsworth tallied 18 points but also had five turnovers for BYU (8-6, 0-1), which has lost four of its last five. Eric Mika registered 17 points and seven rebounds, Matt Carlino had 13 points before fouling out and Tyler Haws put in 11 points but turned the ball over five times and hit just 4-of-15 shots from the field.
The Lions stormed into the intermission, leading 48-33. They knocked down just 40 percent of their attempts from the floor, but had eight more field goal tries than the Cougars, who they outscored, 13-6, from beyond the arc in the frame.
After the break the Lions netted 5-of-8 shots from beyond the arc, part of a 44.8 percent overall shooting performance, to hold on for the win.
BYU hit on 44.4 percent of its shots from the floor but was outscored, 24-9, from 3-point range.
