Kingston, RI (SportsNetwork.com) - Kadeem Batts knocked down 1-of-2 at the free-throw line with 22 seconds to play to give the Providence Friars a 50-49 victory over the Rhode Island Rams in an intrastate, non-conference clash at the Ryan Center.
Bryce Cotton led the way for the Friars (8-2) with 15 points, while Tyler Harris added 11 points.
For the Rams (6-4), Gilvydas Biruta finished with 13 points and Xavier Munford scored 11.
Providence shot 47.6 percent from the field in the first half, including 4- of-9 from 3-point distance as the Friars took a 29-25 lead at the break. They held Rhode Island to 44 percent shooting, including 0-of-2 from beyond the arc.
Both teams struggled from the floor after intermission, with the Friars shooting just 29.6 percent from the field and the Rams little better at 34.5 percent. They combined to shoot just 2-of-13 from 3-point range in the second half. Though they were able to tie the score on several occasions, the Rams were never able to take the lead after halftime. After Betts made his game- winning free-throw with the score knotted at 49-49, Rhode Island had a chance to win at the buzzer, but a fadeaway jumper by E.C. Matthews was short, ensuring victory for the visitors.
The Rams had the advantage in the paint, outscoring the Friars 38-26. The teams each pulled down 35 rebounds and turned over the ball just 10 times apiece.
