NCAA Game Summary - Purdue at West Virginia

(Sunday, December 22nd)

Final Score: Purdue 73, West Virginia 70

Morgantown, WV (SportsNetwork.com) - Terone Johnson poured in 20 points to lead the Boilermakers as Purdue downed the West Virginia Mountaineers, 73-70, in a non-conference bout at the WVU Coliseum.

Ronnie Johnson contributed 14 points, five rebounds and four assists for Purdue (10-3) as it picked up its second win in a row. Basil Smotherman chipped in 11 points while A.J. Hammons grabbed 12 boards and blocked four shots on the defensive end.

Eron Harris paced the Mountaineers (7-5) with 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field. Devin Williams registered a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds while Juwan Staten tallied 14 points and four assists in WVU's third loss in four games.

The Mountaineers took control of the contest in the early stages and Terry Henderson made a 3-pointer to give them a 14-6 lead at the 14:19 mark of the first period. Purdue scored eight unanswered points to tie the score and managed to take a narrow 35-33 lead into halftime. WVU connected on only 2- of-9 attempts from beyond the arc in the first half.

Purdue controlled the second stanza and held a 69-61 edge on the scoreboard with 1:27 left in regulation, but it missed five free-throw attempts in the final minute to give the Mountaineers some hope. Terone Johnson made a late trip to the charity stripe with the Boilermakers clinging to a 72-70 lead. After sinking his first attempt, Johnson failed to ice the game. However, Purdue still prevailed after Harris missed a potentially game-tying 3-point attempt as time expired. Purdue hit on 4-of-8 attempts from beyond the arc and limited WVU to just 35.3 percent efficiency from the floor over the final 20 minutes of the contest.

The Boilermakers enjoyed a 45-38 edge in the rebounding battle and outscored WVU, 25-4, in bench points.
