Pervak tops Birnerova to take Tashkent title

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (Sports Network) - Top-seeded Russian Ksenia Pervak captured her first WTA title by beating Czech Eva Birnerova, 6-3, 6-1 in the final of the Tashkent Open.

Pervak, who lost to Vera Zvonareva in her first career title match at Baku in July, did not drop a set this week. She entered the tournament ranked 52nd, but Saturday's win ensured the left-hander a first-place prize of $37,000.

"Both of us were nervous, but being the top seed was a little more pressure on me," Pervak said. "I'm so happy. This win is very special for me as it's my first win on the WTA circuit. It was a pleasure to play here and get big support from the crowd."

Birnerova had won just three main draw matches on the WTA level this year before this week's surprising run.

"I went into the match a little tired after playing some three-set matches this week, but full credit to Ksenia for her win," Birnerova said. "I think Ksenia has improved. Her concentration is good and she's very consistent. She's a tough opponent."
