TFC's Frings announces his retirement

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Toronto FC captain Torsten Frings announced his retirement from football after 18 years as a professional.

Frings signed with Toronto FC in 2011 and went on to make 46 appearances for the club, scoring two goals and adding three assists across all competitions. His 2012 season was hampered by injuries, which ultimately influenced the former Germany international's decision to retire.

"During preseason we discovered that my recovery would take longer than expected. I always want to do what's best for the team and that is why I have decided to step away," Frings said in a statement. "I really enjoyed my time in Toronto and playing for Toronto FC. I wish the club all the best this season and hopefully they can continue to embrace the winning spirit that I brought to the team."

The 36-year-old has amassed 79 caps for Germany in addition to representing his country in two World Cups.

At the club level, Frings competed in Germany's Bundesliga for 14 seasons, enjoying stints with high-profile clubs like Werder Bremen, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.
