Vancouver adds EPL veteran O'Brien
Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced the signing of defender Andy O'Brien on Wednesday, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and Visa.
O'Brien joins the Whitecaps after spending the past two seasons in England with Leeds United, where he scored two goals in 38 appearances.
"Andy is an experienced center half, who is good in the air and comfortable on the ball," said Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie. "He has spent several years in the English Premier League and with some of England's best-known clubs. Andy also had the privilege of being at a World Cup. We're delighted to add a defender of Andy's experience to our squad."
The 33-year-old spent time in England's top flight with Bradford City, Newcastle, Portsmouth and Bolton, logging over 300 appearances in the EPL.
"I'm very grateful for the opportunity given to me by Vancouver Whitecaps FC," said O'Brien. "I appreciate the hard work that's been put in by Vancouver, given the short period of time there was to get this deal done. I've had the opportunity to look around the city, which is fantastic, and I'm really looking forward to contributing on and off the pitch."
