Australia international Emerton announces retirement

Sydney, Australia (SportsNetwork.com) - Australia international Brett Emerton brought an end to his professional career Thursday by announcing his retirement at the age of 34.

Emerton has made 94 appearances for the Australian national team to become the country's third-most capped player, trailing only Mark Schwarzer and current captain Lucas Neill.

A chronic back injury has forced Emerton to walk away from the game after making just nine appearances with Sydney FC this season.

Emerton, a former captain of Blackburn Rovers, represented Australia at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups and scored 20 times for his country.
