Tottenham stays perfect in Europa League
London, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Tottenham continued its impressive Europa League campaign on Thursday by cruising to a 4-1 victory over Anzhi at White Hart Lane.
Spurs were in front by the six-minute mark as Roberto Soldado sent a glancing header into the back of the net from a tough angle. The Spain international doubled Tottenham's advantage 10 minutes later, but Santos Ewerton cut Anzhi's deficit in half with a goal just before halftime.
The second half, however, was all Tottenham as Lewis Holtby restored the club's two-goal margin in the 54th minute with a brilliant turn and a slick finish off of a half-volley.
Soldado helped put the match further out of reach for Anzhi, completing his hat trick from the penalty spot in the 70th minute.
Tottenham enjoyed an unblemished record in the Europa League group stage this term, taking 18 points for its six contests in Group K. Anzhi finishes the group in second place to join Tottenham in the next round, while Sheriff Tiraspol, which claimed a 2-0 win over Tromso on Thursday, exits the competition along with the last-placed Norwegian club.
In Group A, Valencia's 1-1 draw with Kuban Krasnodar helped Swansea City advance despite the club's 1-0 loss to St. Gallen on Thursday. Valencia tops the group on 13 points.
In Group B, Chornomorets booked its spot in the next round thanks to a 1-0 defeat of PSV Eindhoven while Ludogorets continued its dominance of the group by getting a 2-1 victory at Dinamo Zagreb.
In Group C, Red Bull Salzburg's 3-0 defeat of Esbjerg ensured the club's perfect record through six Europa League matches while Standard Liege finished the group stage winless after suffering a 3-1 loss to Elfsborg.
In Group D, Maribor advanced behind a 2-1 victory over Wigan while Rubin Kazan maintained its unbeaten Europa League record with a 2-0 win against Zulte Waregem.
In Group E, Fiorentina clinched top spot thanks to a 2-1 win over second-place Dnipro while Pacos Ferreira and Pandurii played to a 0-0 draw.
In Group F, Eintracht Frankfurt and Maccabi Tel Aviv advanced behind 2-0 and 1-0 wins over APOEL and Bordeaux, respectively.
In Group G, Jelle Vossen provided the lone goal in Genk's 1-0 defeat of FC Thun and Dynamo Kyiv overturned a one-goal deficit to get a 3-1 win over Rapid Vienna.
In Group H, Sevilla secured first place in the group with a 2-0 defeat of Freiburg while Liberec claimed second place with a 2-1 win over Estoril.
In Group I, Lyon came from behind in a 2-1 victory over Guimaraes while Real Betis was held to a 0-0 draw by Rijeka.
In Group J, Lazio and Trabzonspor, already assured of progression to the next round, played to a 0-0 draw while Legia Warsaw earned a 2-0 win at Apollon Limassol.
And in Group L, PAOK and AZ Alkmaar played to a 2-2 to draw to see the top of the table remain unchanged and Maccabi Haifa came from behind in a 2-1 defeat of Shakhter Karagandy.
