Cruzeiro continues roll with defeat of Palmeiras
Sao Paulo, Brazil (SportsNetwork.com) - Cruzeiro extended its lead atop the Brasileiro on Sunday by cruising to a 2-1 win at Palmeiras.
The visitors were two goals to the good inside the opening 10 minutes as Ricardo Goulart broke the deadlock in the eighth minute with his league- leading seventh goal of the season.
Manoel struck just two minutes later to put Cruzeiro firmly in the driver's seat.
It looked as if it would be a rout in favor of the visitors, but Palmeiras managed to hold them off and escape to the halftime interval with only a two- goal deficit.
The hosts regrouped in the second period and pulled one back through Fernando Tobio in the 54th minute, but an equalizer for Palmeiras proved to be elusive in the final 36 minutes.
The win sees Cruzeiro improve to 25 points on the season to bring the club five points clear of second-place Corinthians, which could only manage a 0-0 draw at Vitoria on Sunday.
Palmeiras has claimed just one point from its last five Brasileiro matches to remain on just 13 points for the season.
Also on Sunday, four different scorers guided Internacional to a comfortable 4-0 victory over lowly Flamengo, Marcelo and Douglas Coutinho scored five minutes apart in Atletico PR's 2-0 victory over Criciuma, Dario Leonardo Conca provided the lone goal in Fluminense's 1-0 defeat of Santos and Goias played to a 0-0 draw with Sport Recife.
Saturday's action saw Giuliano notch the lone goal in the Gremio's 1-0 defeat of Figueirense while Ricardo Conceicao gave Chapecoense three points with a 1-0 victory at Sao Paulo, Bolatti nabbed the only goal in Botafogo's 1-0 victory over Coritiba and Atletico Mineiro shared the spoils with Bahia in a 1-1 draw.
