Vitoria puts five past Atletico PR
Sao Paulo, Brazil (Sports Network) - Atletico Paranaense could have climbed back into second place over the weekend, but the club squandered the chance by conceding five goals in a 5-3 home defeat against Vitoria.
Atletico fell behind 3-0 at halftime but rallied to score three times in the span of 12 minutes, including two goals from Ederson.
However, Vitoria finished the match strong with goals from William Henrique and Ayrton in the final 10 minutes to claim all three points.
The loss leaves Atletico in fourth place, 12 points adrift of leaders Cruzeiro, while Vitoria is still seven points back of Atletico despite the win.
Cruzeiro is still comfortably atop the league following its 2-1 triumph over Internacional that saw Willian score the winning goal in the 52nd minute after the two teams traded goals in the opening five minutes.
Gremio and Botafogo are the closest challengers at the moment, but both teams reside 12 points behind Cruzeiro.
Gremio escaped Sao Paulo with a 1-0 win thanks to a second-half goal from Eduardo Vargas, while Botafogo suffered a 1-0 setback at home against second- from-the-bottom Ponte Preta as Elias converted a penalty kick late in the first half to separate the teams.
Fluminense came from a goal down at halftime to top Goias, 2-1, with Jean and Rafael Sobis scoring for Fluminense, while last-place Nautico collected only its third win in 24 games by beating Coritiba, 3-0, behind two goals from Maikon Leite.
Gilberto scored a hat trick as Portuguesa downed Corinthians, 4-0, Hernane's brace led Flamengo to a 4-1 win over Criciuma, Atletico Mineiro moved into fifth place by topping Santos, 3-1, while Bahia and Vasco da Gama played to a 0-0 draw.
