GAME NOTES: The Idaho Vandals will try once again to secure their first victory of the 2012-13 season when they play host to the Green Bay Phoenix on Tuesday night.
Green Bay opened the campaign with a pair of wins over Chicago State (72-67) and Southern Utah (66-54), but came back to Earth with consecutive losses to Nevada (71-69) and Cal State Fullerton (93-82). The Phoenix play their basketball out of the Horizon League, and they will kick off conference play at home against Wright State on Jan. 3, 2013.
As mentioned, Idaho is still searching for that elusive first win after dropping a pair of home games to Wright State (80-70) and Montana (66-63). The Vandals are wrapping up a season-opening, three-game homestand tonight, and they will lift the lid on the Western Athletic Conference portion of their schedule against league newcomer Seattle University on Dec. 29.
Green Bay has won both previous meetings with Idaho, the most recent of which occurred at home last season in a 63-61 final.
Offensive production hasn't been Green Bay's problem this season, as the team boasts three double-digit scorers and averages 72.2 ppg. Despite that solid scoring number, the Phoenix are shooting just 38.8 percent from the field, and they have had all kinds of trouble knocking down three-point baskets, doing so at just a 20.6 percent clip (14-of-68). Turnovers have also plagued the squad (17.5 per outing), with its three top scorers all having double-digit giveaways to this point. Keifer Sykes paces the unit with 16.0 ppg, while Alec Brown adds 12.8 ppg and leads the team in rebounding with 8.5 rpg. Brennan Cougill has been a solid contributor as well, posting averages of 12.3 points and 7.0 caroms per contest. Brown scored 20 points and grabbed seven boards in the recent loss to Cal State Fullerton, as the Titans shot 54.7 percent from the floor and nailed 10 of their 20 three-point tries, compared to a dismal 4- of-24 showing by the Phoenix. Jordan Fouse and Sultan Muhammad added 11 points each in the losing cause.
Idaho's primary issue thus far has been its inability to stop the opposition from scoring (73.0 ppg). Foes are shooting 46.7 percent from the floor, compared to a solid 47 percent for the Vandals, who are hitting only 28.6 percent of their three-point attempts. Opponents are however, draining 40 percent of their long-range tries. Kyle Barone (18.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg) is Idaho's leading scorer and rebounder through two games, but Stephen Madison (16.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg) isn't far off the pace. Madison poured in 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the recent loss to Montana, while Barone added 19 points and seven boards. Idaho shot 42.1 percent from the floor, but missed 14 of its 19 three- point attempts. Conversely, the Grizzlies drained 47.9 percent of their total shots, which included a 7-of-15 showing from beyond the arc.
The Vandals' troubles are likely to continue as long as they have difficulty slowing down the opposition. Expect that to be case once more as the Phoenix fly high in putting the brakes on their current two-game slide.
