GAME NOTES: The Boise State Broncos continue a three-game homestand to begin the season when they welcome the Oakland Golden Grizzlies to Taco Bell Arena for a non-conference affair.
Greg Kampe's Golden Grizzlies are coming off a 90-79 defeat at the hands of Lousiana. The loss dropped Oakland to 1-1 on the year after an impressive 96-62 rout of Albion in the season opener. In his 29th season at the helm, Kampe is just nine wins shy of 500 for his career.
Boise State opened its season with a resounding 81-63 win over Texas Southern. it was the sixth straight season-opening win for the Broncos. Fourth-year head coach Leon Rice is hoping his team will use the early season homestand to build some momentum going forward.
This marks the first-ever meeting between these two teams on the hardwood.
The Golden Grizzlies rely heavily on their starting lineup, as the team's depth is suspect at best. Of the five starters, four are currently averaging double figures after the first two games, led by guard Travis Bader. The redshirt junior is a preseason All-Summit League First-Team selection and has played like it at 21.5 ppg, netting 27 in the opener against Albion. Fellow junior guard Duke Mondy (18.5 ppg) was outstanding in the loss to Louisiana, netting a career-high 30 points. Senior forward Drew Valentine (14.5 ppg) and redshirt sophomore Corey Petros (12.0 ppg) round out the top scoring threats.
In the Broncos' season opener they had five players score in double figures and shot 52.5 percent from the field. Boise State dominated the glass against Texas Southern, pulling down 42 rebounds compared to just 26 by the Tigers. Derrick Marks led the charge with 16 points and eight rebounds. Kenny Buckner came off the bench to tally 12 points in 14 minutes of work. Ryan Watkins and Anthony Drmic chipped in with 11 points apiece, while Mikey Thompson finished with 10. The Broncos dominated in several areas, outrebounding Texas Southern, 42-26, while holding their foe to a mere .368 shooting. In addition, Boise State showed the ability to move the ball around, amassing 16 assists in the game.
Both offenses have shown the ability to get several players involved in the offensive gameplan. In what could be a high-scoring game, Boise State gets the nod at home.
