GAME NOTES: The Georgia Bulldogs try their luck on the road again as they square off with their rival Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta.
Georgia arrives at this contest with a 2-5 record, having lost its most recent outing in a 64-53 decision at South Florida on Friday. The Bulldogs opened up the season with a six-point win over Jacksonville, but then suffered four setbacks in a row to Youngstown State (68-56), Southern Miss (62-60), Indiana (66-53), and UCLA (60-56) before topping East Tennessee State for a 16-point win. Coach Mark Fox will need to get his team to produce on the offensive end of the floor to avoid another losing slide. The Bulldogs are averaging only 57.1 ppg on 40 percent shooting from the field.
The Yellow Jackets have played surprisingly well this season. Coach Brian Gregory's squad endured a 75-62 loss at Illinois its last time out, which dropped its overall record to 4-2. Georgia Tech had been very tough on the defensive end of the court prior to its encounter with the Fighting Illini. All but one of its opponents were held under the 70-point mark and GT is carrying a scoring defense average of only 55.7 ppg. The Yellow Jackets were leading in the second half in both their loss to Illinois and to California in the DirecTV Classic.
The two schools have met 188 previous times, and Georgia Tech holds a 102-86 lead in the series, which began in 1906. The series has been played alternately on the respective schools? campus since the 1995-96 season.Georgia Tech snapped a 13-game series losing streak in games played in Athens with a 68-56 win over Georgia last December
Georgia finished its last outing with a 40.8 field goal percentage, but it attempted 14 less free throws than South Florida in the contest. The Bulldogs have a legitimate go-to-guy in shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. The sophomore had led the team in scoring in all seven games to build a 17.6 ppg scoring average. Caldwell-Pope also leads the team in rebounding, steals, and minutes. Sophomore forward Nemanja Djurisic is second on the team with 8.3 ppg and Vincent Williams is dishing out three assists per outing.
Illinois was the first team to figure out how to produce versus Georgia Tech. The Fighting Illini knocked down 14-of-28 attempts from beyond the arc and limited themselves to 14 turnovers in the contest. The Yellow Jackets shot 44.2 percent from the field, but could not overcome its 36-30 deficit in the rebounding battle or 17 turnovers. Kammeon Holsey led the team with 14 points off the bench while Jason Morris and Mfon Udofia chimed in with 10 points each. Holsey is leading the team in scoring with 11.2 ppg while Marcus Georges-Hunt is second with 11 ppg. Gregory's squad uses up a lot of energy on the defensive end which requires a deep 10-man rotation.
The Bulldogs are not going to figure out their offensive woes against Georgia Tech. Caldwell-Pope needs to have an unbelievable performance to carry the team or it will fall once again. The Yellow Jackets were killed from 3-point range their last time out, but they should be better off against Georgia, which has far fewer scoring options than Illinois.
