Description: Boston outfielder Jonny Gomes was ejected from Sunday's game against Tampa Bay. SOURCE: Tim Britton, Providence Journal
Insight: Gomes came running at Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar after Escobar stole third with Tampa Bay already leading 8-3. Gomes and Escobar were both tossed. Mike Carp has come on to play left field for the Red Sox, who are on the verge of dropping their tenth game in a row.

Cold5/20/2014 10:26:00 AM
Description: Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes should be avoided against Tuesday starter J.A. Happ.
Insight: Gomes normally hits left-handers much better than right-handers (.277 vs. .225), but he's just 1-for-12 (.083) against the Blue Jays southpaw.

10/23/2013 4:26:00 PM
Description: As expected, Jonny Gomes is getting the start in left field Wednesday in Game 1 against St. Louis.
Insight: Gomes has outperformed Daniel Nava this postseason and should be the team's starter in left field for the forseeable future. The 32-year-old is 2-for-10 in his career against tonight's starter Adam Wainwright.

10/21/2013 8:02:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox are likely to start Jonny Gomes in left field Wednesday in Game 1 of the World Series. SOURCE: Boston Herald
Insight: Gomes appeared in five of the team's six games against Detroit in the ALCS. Daniel Nava, who platooned with Gomes in left field during the regular season, could draw a start or two later in the series.

10/17/2013 6:39:00 PM
Description: Red Sox left fielder Jonny Gomes is back in the lineup for Game 5.
Insight: Gomes and Daniel Nava have been alternating starts in left field. Gomes' biggest contribution of the series came in Game 2 when he scored on Jarrod Saltalamacchia's game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth.

10/13/2013 10:24:00 AM
Description: Jonny Gomes is expected to start in left field Sunday in Game 2 against the Tigers. SOURCE: Drew Silva, NBC Sports
Insight: Gomes started the first two games of the Division Series against Tampa Bay but has been limited to pinch-hitting duty since then. He'll get the nod over Daniel Nava, who went 1-for-3 in last night's 1-0 loss.

7/20/2013 9:26:00 AM
Description: Boston outfielder Jonny Gomes hit his seventh homer of the season Friday night, but is not a good play on Saturday.
Insight: Gomes is hitless in eight at-bats versus Yankees right-hander Hiroki Kuroda with three strikeouts. Daniel Nava should get the start in his place as he's 4-for-12 against Kuroda.

Cold6/15/2013 8:26:00 PM
Description: Boston outfielder Jonny Gomes hit his fourth homer of the season Saturday against the Orioles.
Insight: Gomes was supposed to be Boston's starting left fielder this season, but he is fourth on the corner outfield depth chart behind Shane Victorino, Daniel Nava and Mike Carp.

Cold5/28/2013 9:46:00 AM
Description: Boston outfielder Jonny Gomes should not be started on Tuesday under any conditions if Cliff Lee is on the mound as he's an inept 2-for-29 (.069) against the Phillies left-hander.
Insight: Gomes hasn't done much this season against anyone (.176, 2 HR, 10 RBI), so if he's still on your roster keep him firmly seated on your bench.

4/23/2013 11:31:00 AM
Description: If Boston outfielder Jonny Gomes returns to the team in time (birth of his third child) he has a favorable matchup against Oakland right-hander Bartolo Colon. He's 5-for-13 against the veteran starter with a pair of homers and a 1.429 OPS.
Insight: Gomes hasn't done much this season (.172, 0 HR, 0 RBI) and isn't likely to see regular at bats until Daniel Nava (.326, 4 HR, 14 RBI) cools off, but this matchup might be worth John Farrell finding a spot start for him.

Description: Boston outfielder Jonny Gomes left the team to witness the birth of his third child this afternoon. SOURCE: Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: He's not in the starting lineup but there's a chance he could be available to pinch hit if he makes it back to Fenway Park in time. Gomes (.172, 0 HR, 0 RBI) isn't likely to see regular at bats until Daniel Nava (.326, 4 HR, 14 RBI) cools off.

4/16/2013 10:21:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH Jonny Gomes is a career .417 hitter versus Cleveland starter Ubaldo Jimenez with a pair of homers and a 1.378 OPS.
Insight: Gomes is 3-for-19 this season and zero for his last 11 at-bats, but has a favorable matchup on Tuesday.

4/11/2013 6:36:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH Jonny Gomes is once again out of Boston's lineup Thursday against the Orioles with right-hander Chris Tillman on the hill.
Insight: Gomes is 3-for-13 this season, but he hasn't played since April 8. Daniel Nava, who has homered in three straight games, will DH Thursday night.

4/3/2013 12:04:00 PM
Description: Boston manager John Farrell could choose to sit Jonny Gomes on Wednesday as he's never managed to produce against Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda. He's 0-for-8 in their career matchups with three strikeouts.
Insight: Gomes was 2-for-4 on Monday, but has an unfavorable matchup. The Red Sox still have plenty of DH options even with David Ortiz sidelined. Mike Napoli, Daniel Nava or Jarrod Saltalamacchia could get the role.

3/24/2013 11:45:00 AM
Description: Boston manager John Farrell has decided that no one player will serve as the designated hitter in the absence of David Ortiz (heels). "We feel like this will be a rotating thing rather than one person being the regular DH," Farrell said. "It serves a couple of benefits. You’re looking for matchups; you’re looking for a day off their feet." SOURCE: Boston.com
Insight: The Boston Globe lists Jonny Gomes, Mike Napoli, Daniel Nava and Jarrod Saltalamacchia as players who could DH while Ortiz is on the DL. However, Gomes will likely be in the lineup on a regular basis, either as the left fielder or DH, early in the season. Gomes hit .299 with 11 homers and a .974 OPS against lefties last season, compared to .209 with seven homers against right-handers. Those numbers coincide with his career splits.

11/21/2012 9:18:00 PM
Description: Outfielder Jonny Gomes and the Red Sox have officially come to terms on a new two-year, $10 million deal.
Insight: Gomes showed decent power last season as a platoon player in Oakland (.491 SLUG, .868 OPS). It's safe to pencil him in as the team's starting right fielder.

11/21/2012 4:09:00 PM
Description: Scott Lauber from the Boston Herald reports that outfielder Jonny Gomes is on the verge of signing a two-year deal with the Red Sox.
Insight: Gomes is expected to replace Cody Ross as the team's everyday right fielder. The ten-year vet swatted 18 long balls for the A's in 2012. He's a .262 lifetime hitter in 31 games at Fenway Park.

9/16/2012 10:33:00 AM
Description: If there's any day to start Oakland outfielder Jonny Gomes, it's Sunday. Gomes is 12-for-22 with two homers against Orioles starter Randy Wolf.
Insight: Gomes' .545 career average against Wolf makes him an intriguing one-day play Sunday.

8/31/2012 10:15:00 AM
Description: Oakland outfielder Jonny Gomes "owns' Boston starter Aaron Cook. He's faced him 14 times, producing seven hits, including three home runs and a 1.714 OPS.
Insight: Gomes is currently in a bit of a slump, with just one hit in his last 14 at-bats, but this matchup is too good to resist. If manager Bob Melvin writes Gomes into his Friday lineup, you should too.

Insight: Gomes is currently in a bit of a slump, batting just .174 over his last eight games, but this matchup is too good to resist. If manager Bob Melvin writes Gomes into his Wednesday lineup, you should too.
