Description: Miami catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia will receive a day of rest Sunday against the Mariners.
Insight: Salty is hitting .283 with four doubles, two homers, 10 walks and 17 strikeouts in 53 at-bats so far. Jeff Mathis is catching Kevin Slowey.

Description: Miami catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is getting a day off Sunday versus Philadelphia.
Insight: He caught all ten innings last night and could probably use the rest. Joe Mathis (.200, 0 HR, 0 RBI) is making his third start of the year behind the plate.

Description: Marlins catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia should be avoided on Friday in the series opener with Philadelphia.
Insight: Saltalamacchia is 1-for-10 over his career, a single, with seven strikeouts. He's off to a solid start, batting .276 with a homer and four RBI, but having played in hitter-friendly parks in Texas and Boston we don't think he's going to like Miami all that much.

Description: The Marlins have signed catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia to a three-year deal worth $21 million. SOURCE: Juan C. Rodriguez, Sun Sentinel
Insight: Saltalamacchia was also being pursued by Minnesota. He ended up choosing the Marlins because they were the only team that offered him three years. He's a serviceable fantasy catcher though he tends to strike out a lot (139 K's in 425 at bats last season).
Cold11/27/2013 1:00:00 PM
Description: If the Red Sox want to keep Jarrod Saltalamacchia, they may have to wait in line. The free agent catcher is also being pursued by the Blue Jays, Rockies and Twins according to NESN's Jen Slothower.
Insight: Boston struck out with Carlos Ruiz (re-signed with Philadelphia) and Brian McCann (Yankees), which leaves Salty and veteran A.J. Pierzynski as the top catchers left on the market. The Twins are in the running because they've decided to make Joe Mauer a full-time first baseman. Saltalamacchia (.273, 14 HR, 65 RBI) had his moments in 2013 but inconsistency caused him to lose his starting job to David Ross in the postseason.
Cold10/27/2013 10:58:00 AM
Description: Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia sealed Boston's fate by delivering a poor throw to third base late in Saturday's loss to St. Louis.
Insight: Will Middlebrooks was charged with the error but the throw was one that never should have been made. Saltalamacchia's poor defense also contributed to a loss two nights earlier back at Fenway Park (he mishandled a throw from left fielder Jonny Gomes, which led to a pair of runs). Salty's poor play in the field could be overlooked if he was hitting but he's not doing that either (.188 AVG in 32 postseason at bats). Look for David Ross to sub in for the struggling Saltalamacchia Sunday in Game 4.
10/24/2013 7:01:00 PM
Description: Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is back in the lineup after sitting out Game 1 Wednesday night.
Insight: David Ross has been catching all of Jon Lester's starts, so it wasn't a surprise to see Salty on the sidelines yesterday. He's never faced tonight's starting pitcher Michael Wacha.
10/19/2013 11:19:00 AM
Description: Boston catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has a good track record against Max Scherzer.
Insight: He's hitting .417 against him in 12 at bats. Saltalamacchia (.273 AVG this postseason) sat out Game 5 but he should be back in there on Saturday.

Description: The Red Sox haven't released their lineup for Game 6 yet but all indications are that catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia will be in it. SOURCE: Erik Boland, Newsday
Insight: David Ross got the start in Game 5 and actually did a great job with two hits and a bone-crushing takeout of Alex Avila at home plate. Still, Saltalamacchia is the better offensive player and deserves to be behind the plate for Saturday's potential series-clincher.
10/17/2013 6:27:00 PM
Description: Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia won't be in the lineup for Thursday's Game 5 against the Tigers.
Insight: David Ross will start in his place. Salty is hitting .273 this postseason. That's the same batting average he carried during the regular season (.273 in 425 at bats).
10/16/2013 11:08:00 AM
Description: Jarrod Saltalamacchia rejuvenated the Red Sox with a game-winning hit in Game 2. Now he faces another favorable matchup Wednesday in Game 4.
Insight: Salty owns a .455 career average versus Tigers starter Doug Fister. A win today would put Boston in the driver's seat. The Red Sox currently lead the series two games to one.
Hot10/8/2013 10:32:00 AM
Description: Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is a career .320 hitter with three long balls and a 1.233 OPS against Tampa Bay Game 4 starter Jeremy Hellickson.
Insight: Saltalamacchia (.273, 14 HR, 65 RBI) is 3-for-8 with three RBI in the two games he's played against Tampa Bay this postseason.
10/5/2013 4:00:00 PM
Description: Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia isn't starting Saturday against Tampa Bay.
Insight: Backup David Ross is a much better hitter against David Price (.400 lifetime AVG) so he got the nod instead. Saltalamacchia (.273, 14 HR, 65 RBI) should be a go for Game 3 on Monday.
10/5/2013 10:59:00 AM
Description: Boston catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia probably won't have much success Saturday against David Price. He's only an .071 lifetime hitter versus the Rays lefthander.
Insight: Salty had a huge game on Friday (2-for-4, 2B, BB, 3 RBI) but he's unlikely to repeat the effort Saturday with Price pitching for Tampa Bay. Price is 10-6 against the Red Sox in his career including 2-2 this season (2.48 ERA in 32 2/3 innings).
Hot9/29/2013 10:26:00 AM
Description: Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has a tough matchup in the regular season finale.
Insight: He'll face Orioles starter Chris Tillman, a pitcher he has gone 2-for-19 against with seven strikeouts. However, Saltalamacchia is also 15-for-37 (.405) with five doubles, three homers and 11 RBI over his last 10 games, so you'll probably want to leave him in the lineup Sunday. The catcher has hit .272 with 40 two-baggers, 14 homers, 65 RBI and an .803 OPS this season.
Hot9/26/2013 12:09:00 PM
Description: Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has hit .424 (14-for-33) with three homers and 10 RBI over his last nine games.
Insight: This stretch has followed a 0-for-20 slump. Boston is expected to face two right-handers at Baltimore in its final series of the season, and Salty is hitting .292 with 12 homers and an .872 OPS against righties this season.
9/14/2013 9:43:00 AM
Description: Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is not in the starting lineup for Saturday afternoon's matchup against the Yankees, according to beat writer Pete Abraham.
Insight: Saltalamacchia's grand slam won Friday night's game, but it's a day game after a night game, so he'll be watching from the bench. He's batting .263 with 13 HR and 59 RBI with a .788 OPS.
9/13/2013 10:22:00 PM
Description: Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia was the hero Friday in a win against the Yankees.
Insight: Salty's grand slam broke a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning. He's gone 3-for-5 with a pair of homers since breaking out of an 0-for-21 slump.
Cold9/12/2013 10:05:00 AM
Description: Boston catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has hit .304 with three doubles and two home runs in 23 at-bats against Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson.
Insight: Salty is 0-for-20 over his last six games so he needs this matchup. The catcher has increased his average 37 points from last season but most of his home runs have turned into doubles. He had 17 doubles and 25 homers in 2012 but has 35 doubles and 11 homers in 2013.
9/10/2013 11:45:00 AM
Description: Boston catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia isn't likely to start against David Price with a .083 career average and even if he does, you shouldn't.
Insight: The Red Sox have a better option in David Ross who is 2-for-5 against Price and both hits were home runs.
