(SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of pitchers trying for their initial victories and two managers, each with 1,000 victories, meet Sunday when the Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Indians finish their three-game series at Progressive Field.
Ricky Nolasco gave up five runs and 10 hits in six innings of a loss against the White Sox on Monday. This will be his first career start against the Indians.
Justin Masterson counters for Cleveland. The righty was also the opening day starter and threw seven innings, but didn't factor in the decision of a 2-0 win at Oakland. Masterson yielded just three hits.
Over his career, Masterson has compiled a 3-7 mark with a 4.22 ERA in 21 games (16 starts) when facing the Twins.
Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire picked up career victory 1,000 yesterday in a 7-3 final. Indians skipper Terry Francona, also over 1,000 victories, saw his team's seven-game win streak against the Twins fall by the wayside.
Jason Kubel went 3-for-5 with two RBI to back five-plus strong innings from Kyle Gibson for the Twins.
"My kids and my family are very, very excited," Gardenhire said. "They've been waiting for this."
Brian Dozier added a solo home run and Trevor Plouffe and Josmil Pinto also had an RBI apiece to help Gardenhire reach the milestone and allow the Twins to avenge a 7-2 defeat in Friday's series opener.
Gibson (1-0) yielded just a run on three hits and worked around four walks to outperform counterpart Carlos Carrasco (0-1), who was tagged for five runs -- four earned -- in 5 2/3 frames.
Nyjer Morgan finished 2-for-2 with two walks and Asdrubal Cabrera had an RBI double for the Indians.
"I guess I wish it would have come in the next series," Francona said of Gardenhire's 1,000th win.
Cleveland won 13 of the 19 encounters last season.
