American League Game Summary - Toronto at Boston|
(Sunday, September 22nd)
Final Score: Boston 5, Toronto 2
Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Jackie Bradley, Jr. hit a three-run homer
and Felix Doubront tossed seven effective innings, as Boston took a 5-2
decision over Toronto in the rubber match of a three-game series from Fenway
David Ortiz added a solo shot and Ryan Lavarnway also drove in a run for the
Red Sox, who showed no signs of slowing down despite having clinched the AL
East title on Friday.
"The energy that's here once again has been our advantage," said Red Sox
manager John Farrell about his club recovering from 2011's September collapse
and a last-place finish in 2012. "We've heard a lot about the last two
Septembers, but it hasn't entered the minds of anyone in this clubhouse."
Boston also reached the 95-win plateau for the first time since 2009 and the
seventh time since 2003.
Doubront (11-6) gave up four hits and two runs for the duration of his outing,
while Franklin Morales and Koji Uehara each tossed scoreless frames with the
latter picking up his 21st save.
Kevin Pillar homered and knocked in both runs for the Blue Jays, while R.A.
Dickey (13-13) surrendered six hits and five runs over eight full frames,
fanning 11 in defeat.
Pillar singled home Mark DeRosa with two outs in the second, but the Sox
erupted in the home half to take a 4-1 lead on Lavarnway's two-out RBI single
followed by a three-run blast from Bradley. Daniel Nava began the rally with a
one-out single and Stephen Drew kept the inning alive with a two-out base hit.
Pillar's homer to start the fifth pulled the Jays within two, but Ortiz
responded in kind to begin the Boston sixth and restore a three-run edge.
"I threw maybe two or three that I really regret and two of them got hit out,"
Dickey said. "I had a good knuckleball, I've had a good knuckleball for quite
some time and I expected better from what I felt and what I saw the ball
Doubront retired the final nine batters he faced after the Toronto blast, then
Morales worked out of an eighth-inning jam by fanning Adam Lind with runners
on first and second.
Uehara sewed up the victory with a spotless ninth.
