American League Game Summary - Oakland at Seattle
(Saturday, April 14th)
Final Score: Seattle 4, Oakland 0
Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Offseason acquisitions Hector Noesi and Jesus
Montero are paying early dividends for the Seattle Mariners.
Noesi, acquired in a trade with the Yankees, tossed eight scoreless innings in
Seattle's 4-0 win over Oakland on Saturday.
The eight innings marked a career-high for Noesi (1-1), as did his six
strikeouts. He allowed just five hits in all.
Montero, a part of that same trade, backed the stellar performance with a solo
homer and a two-run double and extended his hit streak to eight games.
"He was amazing today," the catcher Montero said of his pitcher. "His fastball
was unbelievable, in, outside, amazing. We threw a lot of fastballs and
changeups, too, so everything was nice."
Justin Smoak added an RBI for the Mariners, who had lost four of five,
including the opener of this three-game series on Friday.
Tommy Milone (1-1) gave up four runs on four hits over six innings in the loss
for the Athletics. They had won three of four entering Saturday.
"You feel like sometimes you can't give up any runs," said Milone. "It's
harder, but it happens. As a pitcher we want to go out there and throw up
zeros and I didn't do that today."
Noesi allowed just one runner to reach scoring position over the first seven
innings. In the eighth he escaped a two-out, second and third jam by popping
out Coco Crisp to short.
Montero made it 1-0 with a blast to center in the second and added insurance
in the sixth. The bases were loaded when Smoak worked the count full before
taking ball four. Montero then drove in a pair with a line drive double to
right.
Brandon League spelled Noesi in the ninth and worked around a two-out walk to
seal the Mariners' win.
Game Notes
Noesi and Montero were acquired on Jan. 23, 2012 in exchange for pitchers
Michael Pineda and Jose Campos...The Athletics had five hits. They have now
recorded less than 10 hits in each of their first nine games to begin the
season. The franchise record is 10 straight games to start the 1978 campaign.
