Indians survive Royals in series opener
Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Carlos Santana's seventh-inning homer proved to be the difference, while Chris Perez retired Alex Gordon with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, as Cleveland nipped Kansas City, 4-3, in the opener of a three-game series.
Asdrubal Cabrera and Yan Gomes both went deep for the Indians, who have taken five of their last six to remain alive in the AL wild-card race.
Ubaldo Jimenez (11-9) scattered seven hits and one unearned run over seven innings, striking out 10. Perez made things interesting before recording his 23rd save.
Gordon clubbed a two-tun homer in the eighth and Eric Hosmer added an RBI single for the Royals, who lost for the third time in their last nine.
Ervin Santana (8-9) was tagged in defeat for four hits and four runs -- three earned -- while fanning seven in seven full frames.
