Astros' White headed to 60-day DL
Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Houston Astros pitcher Alex White will miss at least the first two months of the season after being diagnosed with a strained right elbow on Saturday.
White was pulled from Friday's spring training game against the Chicago Cubs after complaining of a sore elbow, and an examination that followed revealed the strain. The team placed the young right-hander on the 60-day disabled list.
Acquired from the Colorado Rockies for reliever Wilton Lopez in December, White had made Houston's Opening Day roster as a long reliever.
To fill the roster spot, the Astros purchased the contract of veteran Edgar Gonzalez from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Houston also placed reserve outfielder Fernando Martinez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 27, due to a strained left oblique.
J.D. Martinez, who batted .241 with 11 homers and 55 RBI for the Astros last season but failed to make the club out of spring training, was recalled from Oklahoma City to take Fernando Martinez's place.
