NCAA Game Summary - Temple at Cincinnati
(Friday, October 11th)
Final Score: Cincinnati 38, Temple 20
Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Brendon Kay tossed two touchdown passes and ran for a score as the Cincinnati Bearcats routed the Temple Owls, 38-20, in AAC action.
Kay carved up the Owls' defense, completing 31-of-37 passes for 270 yards in the triumph. Tion Green carried 18 times for 91 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Cincinnati (4-2, 1-1 AAC), which bounced back after a disappointing 26-20 loss at South Florida a week ago.
Shaq Washington matched a career-high with 11 catches for 72 yards while Anthony McClung reeled in seven passes, including both of Kay's touchdowns.
True freshman P.J. Walker threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start for Temple (0-6, 0-3). Walker also lost a fumble and was picked off once while running for 47 yards on nine carries.
Jalen Fitzpatrick and Clinton Granger each caught a touchdown pass, and Kenneth Harper gained 72 yards on the ground.
Cincinnati, aided by a holding penalty that negated Harper's 12-yard run on the first play from scrimmage, forced a quick three-and-out before Kay led a 10-play scoring drive. The senior quarterback, who took over for injured starter Munchie Legaux in Week 2, completed all five passes on the series which Green capped with a 24-yard touchdown run.
Later in the first, Walker rolled out to his right and found Jalen Fitzpatrick open in the corner of the end zone. The 35-yard touchdown tied the score at 7-7.
On the ensuing kickoff, Will Hayes of the Owls jarred the ball loose from return man Ralph Abernathy. Temple recovered and Zaire Williams took it in from a yard out to put the visitors ahead. Nick Visco's extra point was off the mark.
The back-and-forth affair continued when the Bearcats jumped back in front early in the second period. Kay faked a bubble screen to his left, leaving the defense off-balance when he threw deep for McClung, who made secured the catch and was tackled into the end zone.
Walker's first real mistake came midway through the second, when he threw the ball up for grabs out of his own end zone. Zach Edwards easily intercepted the floater in Temple territory, which led to Kay's 4-yard touchdown plunge.
The freshman had a short memory however on the next Owls possession. Walker scampered 31 yards on the first play to the 50-yard line. He then found Harper out of the backfield for 16 yards before connecting with Granger for a 30-yard score.
Green's second touchdown run late in the half capped a 71-yard scoring march for Cincy. Green kept the drive going at the Temple 35 when he rushed for three yards on 4th-and-2, and a pass-interference penalty on Abdul Smith set up his 2-yard score.
Temple had an opportunity to add points before halftime, but a mental mistake by the offensive line ultimately left them trailing 28-20 heading into the locker rooms. The Owls took over with 1:00 left and traveled 47 yards in four plays to the Cincinnati 28 before the line got into a scuffle with the Bearcats' defensive line as the seconds ticked off. By the time Walker called for the snap and spiked the ball, the clock had hit zero.
Cincinnati carried the momentum back onto the field after intermission, scoring a touchdown on its opening drive. Kay was a perfect 7-for-7, including his 4-yard touchdown pass to McClung.
Tony Miliano's 44-yard field goal was pure late in the third period to put the Bearcats in front, 38-20.
