Maple Leafs give GM Nonis contract extension

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed senior vice president and general manager David Nonis to a five-year contract extension.

Nonis was named to his current positions this past January.

"Ownership and management felt it was critical to extend David now for a lengthy period of time and to reward him for the progression of the Leafs and (AHL Toronto) Marlies," president and chief executive officer of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Tim Leiweke said in a statement Thursday. "This extension will allow David the time to build his kind of team to produce steady results, year after year. Everyone is excited about his ability and grasp of the NHL landscape and today's new contract agreement will offer the Leafs consistency and a long-term vision."

With the 47-year-old Nonis in charge, the Maple Leafs reached the playoffs for the first time since 2004, finishing fifth in the Eastern Conference with a 26-17-5 record.

Toronto appeared to be headed for the second round before blowing a three-goal third-period lead and losing in overtime to the Boston Bruins in Game 7.

Nonis also served as the general manager of the Vancouver Canucks from 2004-2008.
