(SportsNetwork.com) - Young right-hander Jose Fernandez can remain unbeaten in
his home stadium on Wednesday when the Miami Marlins host the Washington
Nationals in the finale of a three-game series at Marlins Park.
Just 21 years old, Fernandez is 11-0 in 17 career starts in Miami with an
ultra-stingy 1.14 earned run average.
He began 2014 with a pair of victories at home while allowing a single run in
12 2/3 innings, but was beaten 6-3, at Philadelphia on Friday.
In that game, Fernandez was touched for eight hits and six runs in four
He started twice against Washington in 2013 and surrendered just one run while
striking out 13 in 13 innings.
Miami ended an eight-game losing streak on Tuesday, as Tom Koehler tossed
seven scoreless innings, while Giancarlo Stanton
finished 2-for-4 with a three-run blast and drove in five runs as Miami
battered Washington, 11-2.
The teams emptied the benches in the fourth inning after Washington's Ian
Desmond spat toward Koehler after he was nearly hit with a pitch,
then exchanged words with catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
Koehler (2-1) issued five walks, but fanned three and allowed one hit to
complement an offense which set a new season-high for runs scored.
Zach Walters homered for the Nationals, who have dropped four of their last
Stephen Strasburg (1-2) exited after four full frames, having given up eight
hits and six runs along with three walks and five strikeouts.
On Wednesday, the Nationals start right-hander Tanner Roark, who lasted just 4
2/3 innings of a game Washington lost to Atlanta, 7-6, on Friday.
Roark gave up five of the runs before the game stretched into extra innings.
He started once and relieved twice against the Marlins in 2013, earning a 9-2
victory in the lone start after allowing just four hits in six scoreless
