National League Game Summary - Atlanta at Philadelphia
(Sunday, September 8th)
Final Score: Philadelphia 3, Atlanta 2
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Darin Ruf's eighth-inning solo home run helped the Philadelphia Phillies complete a three-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves with a 3-2 victory at Citizens Bank Park.
With the score tied at 2-2, Ruf led off the home half of the eighth and sent a David Carpenter (3-1) offering over the fence in right on a 3-2 count to put the Phillies ahead. B.J. Rosenberg came on in the ninth and recorded a 1-2-3 inning to record his first career save.
"It was a good sign for Darin to go right-center like that," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said.
Cole Hamels (7-13) was stellar for the Phils, striking out nine in eight innings of work, allowing two runs on two hits, both solo home runs by Evan Gattis.
Ruf and Chase Utley had two hits apiece for the Phils, who swept their first series since they took four from the Miami Marlins in early June.
The Phillies put two across in the first inning off Atlanta starter Paul Maholm. With one away, Jimmy Rollins walked and stole second before Utley drove him in with a double to center. Ruf followed with an RBI single, and the Phillies were in control.
Gattis got a hold of a Hamels pitch with one out in the second, launching a home run that traveled an estimated 486 feet, the longest homer in the history of Citizens Bank Park and the longest recorded in the major leagues this season.
The Braves' rookie then tied the score with his second home run off Hamels in the seventh, marking his first-career multi-homer game.
"We didn't do much offensively the whole series," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said.
The Phillies outhit Atlanta, 8-2 ... Maholm pitched six innings, yielding seven hits and two runs while striking out five ... Atlanta's B.J. Upton was 0-for-4 and finished the series 0-for-12 with seven strikeouts ... The Phillies were 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base ... Hamels hasn't lost since July 26.
