American League Game Summary - Tampa Bay at Boston, Game Two
(Tuesday, June 18th)
Final Score: Boston 3, Tampa Bay 1
Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Jonny Gomes' two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth rescued Andrew Bailey and sent the Boston Red Sox to a 3-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in the second half of a doubleheader from Fenway Park.
Bailey (3-0), who relieved a spectacular Felix Doubront, gave up a game- tying homer to Kelly Johnson in the top of the ninth. Daniel Nava drew a leadoff walk against Joel Peralta (1-3) to start the home half, however, and Gomes drilled a pitch well over the Green Monster to end the contest.
"I couldn't find the strike zone," said Peralta. "So I walked [Nava] and I was trying to get [Gomes] with a first-pitch strike down and away. But I missed the location. And most of the time when that happens, you pay for it -- and I did."
Nava clubbed a solo shot in the second inning for the Red Sox, who swept the twinbill following a rain-extended 5-1 decision earlier in the evening.
Doubront ended up tossing eight scoreless innings, giving up three hits and fanning six for the tough no-decision.
Starter Jake Odorizzi allowed a run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings for the Rays, who skidded to their eighth loss in 10 outings.
Nava's homer into the edge of the bullpen in right center put the Sox on the board with one down in the second and appeared to give Boston's starter enough margin for error.
Doubront held the Rays in check for the duration, retiring 17 in a row from Johnson's single to start the third until the final out in the eighth.
Bailey came on for the ninth, but served up the game-tying leadoff homer to Johnson and then a two-out walk to Ben Zobrist. He avoided further trouble by getting Evan Longoria on a fielder's choice grounder.
"Yeah, I'm throwing the ball down the middle," said Bailey. "I've just got to keep grinding through it and focus a little more. I'll get through it. I've been pitching in this league for a couple years now and had success. I've got to get back to doing that."
Boston has won nine of 11 against Tampa Bay this season, including all five on Yawkey Way ... In between games, the Sox placed pitcher Clay Buchholz on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to June 9) with a neck strain, recalled catcher Ryan Lavarnway from Triple-A Pawtucket, placed catcher David Ross on the 7-day concussion disabled list and recalled pitcher Alex Wilson from Pawtucket ... Rays right fielder Wil Myers collected his first major-league hit in his first at-bat of the second contest, after going 0-for-4 in the twinbill opener.
