Final Score: Toronto 2, Texas 0
Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Drew Hutchison outdueled Yu Darvish as the
Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Texas Rangers, 2-0, on Friday in the opener of
a three-game set.
Hutchison (2-3) tossed the first complete game in his brief Major League
career, allowing three hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
Darvish (3-2), meanwhile, picked up right where he left off in his previous
outing, but was the tough-luck loser after going eight innings, surrendering
two runs on five hits and three walks with 11 strikeouts.
Darvish, who hadn't allowed a hit through four innings against Toronto, had a
perfect game through 6 2/3 innings last Friday against Boston before a
controversial play was ruled an error. David Ortiz skied a pop-up into shallow
right field where Alex Rios and Rougned Odor allowed the ball to drop.
Ortiz, who later broke up the potential no-hitter with a single with two outs
in the ninth, appealed the error ruling, and Major League Baseball awarded him
with a hit on the play earlier this week.
The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the eighth off Darvish. Erik Kratz and
Anthony Gose each reached base with bunt singles to open the inning.
Jose Reyes then drove a pitch to the warning track in right that enabled Kratz
to tag up and move to third. Melky Cabrera pulled a 1-1 pitch over Prince
Fielder's head at first into the right-field corner that pushed Kratz and Gose
across for a 2-0 lead.
After intentionally walking Jose Bautista to put runners at the corners, Edwin
Encarnacion grounded into a inning-ending 5-4-3 double play.
Texas' only scoring threat came in the sixth inning when Leonys Martin walked
to lead off the frame.
Odor moved him over with a bunt and Martin then scampered over to third on a
flyout by Shin-Soo Choo. Elvis Andrus grounded out as Hutchison escaped the
