MLB Game Summary - Detroit at Miami

(Saturday, September 28th)

Final Score: Miami 2, Detroit 1 (10 innings)

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Giancarlo Stanton drove in the winning run in the 10th inning as the Miami Marlins took a 2-1 win over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.

With Evan Reed (0-1) on the mound, Justin Ruggiano walked to start the inning. After a sac bunt from Juan Pierre, Reed hit Donovan Solano in the back of the head with a pitch.

Solano had turned just as the ball hit him on the helmet and he was examined on the field before walking off under his own power.

Christian Yelich then walked to load the bases before Stanton punched a single to center for the win.

"He was throwing all heaters so I knew what to look for," said Stanton. "He was all over the place, but when I saw one that looked good to hit I was able to get a good swing on it."

Ed Lucas drove in the other run while Steve Cishek (4-6) got the win for pitching a scoreless 10th inning for the Marlins, who have won four of five.

Alex Avila drove in the only run of the game for the Tigers, who will begin the playoffs as the third seed in the American League.

Neither starter factored into the decision as Anibal Sanchez pitched five innings and gave up just two hits with eight strikeouts for Detroit, while Nathan Eovaldi was charged with a run and seven hits over six innings for Miami.

"I think it's more about getting ready for the playoffs right now," said Sanchez. "We just want to make sure everybody is healthy and set for when the next series starts."

The first run of this game came in the fourth inning, which started with a walk to Prince Fielder. Jhonny Peralta followed with a single to put runners on the corners and Avila's sacrifice fly made it a 1-0 game.

Sanchez went through the order without a blemish before giving up a single to Chris Coghlan to start the fourth. Coghlan then stole second before Solano flied out. An infield single from Yelich was followed by a 4-6-3 double play from Stanton to end the inning.

In the ninth, Joaquin Benoit got the first out, but Yelich singled and Stanton followed with a walk. Lucas later singled home the tying run. Adeiny Hechavarria walked to load the bases, but Rob Brantly hit into a fielder's choice to send the game to extras.

Game Notes

This was the first time Sanchez pitched against his former club. He spent his first six-plus years with the Marlins before heading to Detroit in a trade in 2012 ... This is the first series between these two teams since 2004, when Detroit won two of three matchups in the Motor City.
