National League Game Summary - Arizona at San Diego
(Thursday, April 12th)
Final Score: Arizona 3, San Diego 1
San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Chris Young hit a solo home run, Ian Kennedy
recorded nine strikeouts over six innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat
the San Diego Padres, 3-1, in the rubber match of a three-game series at Petco
Park.
Kennedy (2-0) settled in nicely after allowing three consecutive hits to start
the first inning. The right-hander gave up only two more hits over the rest of
his outing while improving to 6-0 against San Diego in his career.
"[Kennedy] shows up ready to go every day," Young said.
Aaron Hill and Jason Kubel knocked in the other runs for the Diamondbacks, who
bounced back from their first loss of the season.
Anthony Bass started in place of the injured Dustin Moseley and limited
Arizona to a run on three hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 4 1/3
innings.
Micah Owings (0-2) replaced Bass after Hill's game-tying single up the middle
and got Kennedy to ground into an inning-ending double play. Owings returned
to the mound in the sixth and surrendered a double to Kubel that plated Willie
Bloomquist, who had reached on a throwing error by shortstop Jason Bartlett to
begin the sixth, with the go-ahead run.
Young extended Arizona's lead to 3-1 with a two-out shot to left field in the
eighth off Andrew Cashner.
J.J. Putz tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his fourth save.
Cameron Maybin led off the first with a triple and scored on a base hit by
Will Venable. Chase Headley followed with another single, but Kennedy struck
out the next three batters to end the frame.
"We strung some hits together early on him and then he worked his way out of
that," Headley said. "After that, he was pretty dialed in the rest of the
night."
