Workman gets 6-game ban for throwing at Longoria

New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Boston Red Sox pitcher Brandon Workman was fined and suspended six games by Major League Baseball on Tuesday for throwing at Tampa Bay's Evan Longoria in a game last Friday.

Workman's pitch in the sixth inning sailed behind Longoria's back and came after the benches had already cleared once in the game.

The hostilities began in the first inning when Rays starter David Price hit Red Sox slugger David Ortiz in the hip with a pitch.

Red Sox manager John Farrell was ejected by home plate umpire Dan Bellino, who issued warnings to both benches after the pitch.

The benches cleared after Price hit Mike Carp in fourth inning. Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo, the acting manager, was ejected for arguing.

Boston third-base coach Brian Butterfield, the second acting manager of the day, was automatically ejected after Workman's pitch behind Longoria.

Hitting coach Greg Colbrunn ended the game as the Boston's acting manager and the Red Sox won the game 3-2 on A.J. Pierzynski's walk-off triple in the 10th inning.
