GAME NOTES: Coming off a disappointing loss on Thursday night that knocked them out of contention for the second seed in the upcoming Southern Conference Tournament, the Western Carolina Catamounts look to get back on track against the Samford Bulldogs in the regular-season finale for both teams at the Hanna Center.
On Thursday night, playing for a chance to move into a tie for second place in the conference, the Catamounts lost an 83-81 overtime decision to the Chattanooga Mocs. Brandon Boggs scored a game-high 22 points on 7-of-12 field goal shooting, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, for the Catamounts, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. James Sinclair registered 19 points and nine rebounds, while Trey Sumler posted 15 points and seven assists for Western Carolina, which failed to put away the Mocs in the second half and again in overtime.
The Catamounts took control early in the second stanza and led by nine with 14:21 to go, but the Mocs stormed back and held a five-point lead with under five minutes left. WCU went back ahead by three with 21 seconds left following a pair of Boggs free throws, but Chattanooga tied the game with eight seconds to play on a Martynas Bareika 3-pointer to force overtime. In the extra session, WCU held a four-point lead with 33 seconds to play, but Chattanooga finished the game on a 6-0 run, with Jones' layup with 13 seconds left proving to be the game-winner.
Sumler averages 17.6 ppg to lead the Catamounts. Boggs (11.9) and Sinclair (11.6) round out the double-figure scorers for the Catamounts, who average near 74 ppg.
Samford comes into this game having lost four straight after Thursday's 63-57 setback to Appalachian State. Tim Williams posted 20 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, while Michael Bradley registered nine points and 11 rebounds and Isaiah Williams dished out seven assists for the Bulldogs, who also failed to hold onto a late lead.
The Bulldogs took control of the contest early in the second stanza, running out to an eight-point lead with 7:19 to play, but the Mountaineers finished the game off on a 17-3 run, with Tevin Baskin's layup with 56 seconds left proving to be the game-winner.
The leading scorer for Samford is Tim Williams with his 17.4 ppg
These two teams met back on Jan. 18 with Western Carolina coming away with a 67-64 win. Sinclair finished with 15 points and seven rebounds to lift the Western Carolina, which also received 13 points and six assists from Sumler. Isaiah Williams led Samford with 15 points. Tim Williams and Tyler Hood contributed 11 points each for the Bulldogs, who are probably looking at the same fate here.
