GAME NOTES: With a Big West regular season title still in their sights, the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos battle the Cal Poly Mustangs on Saturday at Mott Gym on Saturday evening in the regular-season finale for both squads.
The Gauchos have won four of their last five games, the last an 86-77 decision over Hawaii on Thursday, a win somewhat marred by a UCSB fan storming the court and confronting Hawaii head coach Gib Arnold during play in the first half.
Alan Williams scored 18 points and ripped down 11 rebounds to lead five UCSB players in double figures. Kyle Boswell added 17 points off the bench, Zalmico Harmon chipped in 16, Michael Bryson finished with 13 and Mitch Brewe chimed in with 11.
The win kept the Gauchos within striking distance of conference-leading UC Irvine, but the Anteaters still lead them by a game and can wrap up the league title outright with a win over UC Davis on Saturday.
Williams continues to be one of the most dominant performers in the conference, with his 21.5 ppg and 11.6 rpg both the top mark in the Big West, making him one of only a handful of players in the nation averaging a double- double this late in the season. Bryson (11.2 ppg) and Boswell (10.6 ppg) step up with some offensive support for a squad that nets 72.4 ppg, good enough for third in the league. Most of the hard work this season by limiting foes to 65.6 ppg, second-best in the Big West.
The Mustangs have had a week off since losing at UC Irvine by 55-48 final last Saturday, the program's fourth loss in its last five games. David Nwaba led all scorers with 20 points off the bench, while adding 13 rebounds, and Chris Eversley added 10 points.
Eversley leads the team in scoring this season with a 13.7 ppg average and rounds out his play with solid stats across the board. The senior forward leads the team with 7.4 rpg, and adds 49 assists and 39 steals on the year. Nwaba checks in at second in scoring with 11.9 ppg and records 4.9 rpg. Jamal Johnson leads the Mustangs with 70 assists on the season, and Joel Awich has recorded a team-high 30 blocked shots.
Cal Poly had not won on the road against UC Santa Barbara since 2007 before pulling out a 72-64 win against the Gauchos on Jan. 11. That game is well in the rearview mirror, and the teams have gone in opposite directions since then.
