Asheville, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Jelani Hewitt tallied 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists to lead Georgia Southern to an 65-50 victory over Furman in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament.
Tre Bussey netted 14 and Angel Hayes had 10 points for the Eagles (14-18), who advanced to face No. 2 seed Chattanooga in Saturday's quarterfinals.
Charlie Reddick totaled 18 points and seven boards for the Paladins (9-21), who their third straight contest. Stephen Croone added 12 points, five rebounds and four assists in defeat.
Georgia Southern led by 10 with 7:47 left in the first half, but, an 11-4 run brought the Paladins within three, 25-22, with just under four minutes left. The Eagles outscored Furman 10-5 the rest of the way to carry a 35-27 lead into the locker room.
The Eagles opened the second half on a 24-8 tear to stretch their margin to 59-35 with 6 1/2 left to play. The Paladins fired back with nine straight to cut their deficit to 15 but came no closer the rest of the way.
