Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - The Murray State Racers were able to steal an inbounds pass with 3.5 seconds remaining, but a 3-point attempt at the buzzer bounced off the back rim, giving the Belmont Bruins a 99-96 victory in an Ohio Valley Conference showdown at Curb Event Center.
Blake Jenkins and J.J. Mann each tallied 25 points for Belmont (18-8, 9-2 OVC). Mann added nine rebounds to his stat line in the win. Craig Bradshaw scored 22 points with six assists, and Drew Windler notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Bruins have won six of their last seven games.
Cameron Payne led all scorers in the contest with 29 points for Murray State (13-9, 8-2), adding four rebounds and five assists in the loss. Jarvis Williams recorded a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds, and T.J. Sapp chipped in 20 points off the bench. Dexter Fields tallied 15 points, and Jonathan Fairell grabbed 11 boards in the loss, which ended a three-game Racers winning streak.
Both teams were hot in the first half, as Belmont shot 58.6 percent in the frame, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Murray State connected on 57.1 percent of its field goal tries in the period, and both teams went into the intermission knotted at 45-45.
The Racers cooled off to 40.5 percent shooting in the second half, while Belmont kept up the pace. The Bruins hit 53.6 percent of its shot attempts in the half, and went 19-of-24 from the free-throw line.
Murray State held the edge in second chance points, 23-7, and in bench points, 25-8. But the Racers missed 12 free-throw attempts in a three-point loss.
